Galaxy Nexus and other CDMA devices removed from Google Support pages

Verizon Galaxy Nexus

Some of you may have noticed that the Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus is no longer listed as a supported, official developer device by Google. Despite rumors to the contrary, it doesn’t appear this has anything to do with the kerfuffle over Wallet, but instead centers around technical issues relating to the APK files required for CDMA connectivity and the signing of those libraries. Other devices have also disappeared from the support pages, including the Nexus S 4G and the Verizon-branded Xoom. Google has posted an update explaining that, “for various technical reasons” CDMA telephony is handled by binaries provided by the carrier in newer devices. The result is different signatures being associated with those APKs than a pure AOSP builds and, thus, those essential components don’t function properly.

Google explained the disappearance by saying “we aim to make sure that we are as clear as possible about the degree of support that devices have,” before going on to promise all Nexus devices would continue to have unlockable bootloaders and that as many of the closed-source binaries as possible would be made available. Verizon’s ZTE Jetpack flies through FCC, arrival time still unknown

Do you wish you had your own personal Jetpack? Well, you may not have to wait much longer for ZTE’s version — the EuFi I890, announced at CES last month — to come out, if its entry into the records of the FCC are any indication. It may not be the kind that you strap onto your back, but at least this one takes advantage of Verizon’s LTE, and it happens to add in CDMA / EVDO and AT&T-compatible 3G radios. We knew the 4G-packing MiFi was going to hit stores in “the coming weeks,” so this is essentially just one step closer to achieving that goal — unfortunately, we still don’t have a solid date yet. ‘Cougar Town’ cast pitches new, equally lame titles for the show

Cougar Town Cast Pitches New Show Titles – watch more funny videos

A whole bunch of digital ink has been spilled on the fact that “Cougar Town” is both a lame title for a show and one that does not come close to representing what the show is now.

So with Season 3 now less than two weeks away — it premieres on Valentine’s Day — the cast decided to try their hands at coming up with a new title for the show, and filmed it for Funny or Die. The results were … less than auspicious.

Whether it’s “Cougar’s Creek” (Busy Philipps) or “Cougar Town City” (Brian Van Holt) or any of the various eponymous titles Courteney Cox tried out, no one seemed to come up with the right mix (although “Modern Friends” isn’t all that bad). And we’d totally watch Josh Hopkins’ suggested spinoff “Graysons of Anarchy.”

One positive from the show’s poor title? The running gag of the producers making fun of it in the opening credits continues in the new season. It premieres at 8:30 p.m. ET Tuesday, Feb. 14.

‘Sons of Anarchy’ Season 6 now guaranteed as creator Kurt Sutter signs new deal

sons-of-anarchy-to-be-pt1.jpg“Sons of Anarchy” will ride into a sixth season, and possibly beyond.

FX had previously given the green light to a fifth season of the drama, the highest-rated on the cable channel. The additional season comes in the wake of a new deal “SOA” creator Kurt Sutter has signed with 20th Century Fox TV and FX Productions, which produce the show. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the Season 6 pickup.

If the series follows the arc of previous FX shows like “The Shield,” “Nip/Tuck” and “Rescue Me,” a seventh season is likely as well (and would be covered under Sutter’s deal). He doesn’t necessarily want to set a finite end date, though.

“There’s a part of me that does see being able to tell this story in seven seasons, but there’s a part of me that doesn’t want to say, ‘That’s it,’” Sutter tells The Hollywood Reporter. “… If there’s more story to be told after seven seasons and if financially it’s still a feasible endeavor, I’m definitely open to doing more.”

Sutter’s new deal also allows him to develop other shows for either cable or broadcast and includes a script deal at FX.

‘Spartacus: Vengeance’: Lucy Lawless on nude scenes, crazy Lucretia

Lucy-Lawless-crazy-Lucretia.jpgWe’re totally obsessed with “Spartacus: Vengeance” here and we were thrilled to get a chance to sit down with genre legend Lucy Lawless who plays Lucretia at the Winter Press Tour. Lawless, who’s character is in a desperate situation this season, gives us a look at playing a crazy (or not so crazy) woman, doing nude scenes and what playing “Xena: Warrior Princess” has done for public perception.

“I think if she’s crazy, she’s crazy like a fox. She’s entering a terrible — she’s going down a path with many snares and it’s not going to be a comfortable life for her. She hasn’t got any friends. She’s got no support. No husband, no house, no baby, no lover and not a thing. Ilythia (Viva Bianca) shows up and that seems like it ought to be a good thing but it ain’t.”

We asked Lawless about playing “crazy” and what it takes as an actress to walk that fine line between over doing it and getting it just right. “I don’t. People just suspect me. Because it’s Lucretia or because it’s the person who played Xena or who played the bad girl. ‘She’s in the bad girl role,’ that we assume she’s going to be totally bad. I can play it totally straight, absolutely down the line and you’re going to suspect me anyway.”

We talked about doing nude scenes and whether or not she’d gotten comfortable with it. “Who’s comfortable?” she says. “Actually, we have to hire people who are comfortable. If you’re doing a brothel scene, you can’t have extras who are being prima donnas. It just holds everybody up at $100,000 a minute, or however much it is. For us, no. There is no getting used to it. It’s a very funny thing.”

She also says that you sort of lose your sex drive working on the show. “Those things lose their taboo. We’re so sick of thinking about it, worrying about it, talking about it. The show is great for everyone else’s sex drive but ours,” she laughed.

“Spartacus: Vengeance” airs Friday, February 3rd on Starz. Check out a preview of this week’s episode below.
